What is an Indecent Image of a Child?
Indecent images of children is the legal term used to describe sexual images of anyone under 18. This includes images of sexual acts involving children as well as images of naked or partially clothed children and children posing in a sexual manner.
There are various offences connected with Indecent Images of Children. The most serious is distribution of Indecent Images. This is where someone has sent an indecent image to another person. This can be either by email, on a website or in a chat room. It is an offence to be in possession of an indecent image of a child. This can include images that have been deleted.
Indecent Images are sorted into 3 categories depending on the nature of the image.
Category A Indecent Images
The most serious images are category A images. This relates to images showing penetrative sex with a someone under 18. The courts treat these offences very seriously and prison sentences are usually imposed.
Category B Indecent Images
This relates to sexual activity that does not include penetration, for example masturbation. Depending on the circumstances a prion sentence can be imposed for these offences.
Category C Indecent Images.
These are the least serious, but still dealt with harshly by the courts. They can include images of naked children or erotic posing of children.
